Degrees open doors, skills sustain it,’ DVC RISA admonishes final year students at Caleb University Employability Fair

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Strategic Advancement (RISA, Caleb University, Lagos, Prof. Adesola Adetutu Ajayi , on Tuesday charged students to build their futures by developing practical skills and strong professional networks.

She made the call in her welcome address at the 2026 Employability Fair, Theme: "Beyond the Degree: Unlocking Skills, Networks, and Opportunities for a Dynamic Job Market," organized by the university for its final year students.

The employability fair, also known as a career fair or job expo, provides the final year students of the university with the unique opportunity to meet employers, recruiters, and training providers to find jobs, build professional networks, and improve work skills.

The forum will also enable the students to talk face-to-face with company hiring teams, get insights into resume writing and interviewing and meet industry experts to grow contacts.

The DVC urged the students to take advantage of the job expo designed to prepare them for the rapidly evolving job market.

“Degrees open doors, skills keep them open,” the Professor of Microbiology admonished the students.

On his part, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olalekan Asikhia, congratulated the students for taking part in the programme.

He harped on the importance of the Employability Fair and urged the participants to utilize the advantages offered by the forum.

“We want you to convince the CEOs that would come to the university tomorrow and thereafter that you are good enough for what is available outside there,” the VC stated

The Principal Consultant at Nathan Leadgate Limited, Dr. Olumuyiwa Akinrole Oludayo, urged the graduating students to equip themselves with knowledge to navigate modern workforce demands.

Oludayo, who presented a paper titled: “Unlocking Skills, Network and Opportunity For a Dynamic Job Market-  Critical Preparation For the World of Work,” reminded the students that the world of work has been changing and would continue to evolve for years to come.

“ Nothing in life is useless, please note that the leadership skills and other experiences in school will count before potential employers. These will determine how you are placed appropriately,” the guest speaker told the students.

In his presentation, the CEO of Glanvil Enthoven Insurance Brokers and Pension, Dr. Supo Falana, tutored the students on how to prepare for job tests and interviews.

Falana said: “The job market is large enough to accommodate everybody. But unfortunately, only those who are ready for it ultimately sails through.

“This means you must be ready to unlock your skills by building a routine around it. That is you must practice and become perfect in all you are doing.

“Anything you do in life, always a feedback and develop a skill that aligns with your interest/passion.”
